When
plan A fails, always have a plan B and that worked very well to Kenya's
advantage while bidding to host the upcoming 2012 Women in Tourism
International Alliance annual educational tour.
After
failing to secure enough funds to travel to Costa Rica to make an in-person
bid, 15 local WITIA members belonging to the Kenya Association of Women in
Tourism made an online bid and went ahead to win, beating stiff competition
from 30 other countries including USA and Australia. They are now preparing to
host the tour from October 22.
To
get the ball rolling, the WITIA organising committee led by KAWT chairlady
Faith Kithu held a launch at the Nairobi Safari Club last Friday evening that
was well attended by KAWT members and players in the tourism sector. The
conference will welcome 300 international delegates in addition to the 300
locals who will be participating.
Tourism
Secretary Dr Nelson Githinji was the guest speaker representing his minister
Dan Mwazo. He pledged his ministry's support to the organising committee whose
one plea was that the government make repairs to the road leading to the Maasai
Mara. "Tourism is the second largest GDP earner and we must ensure we
continue to look for new ways to market our country."
